Taste Before You Waste is a foundation with the mission to reduce consumer food waste by providing citizens with the inspiration, knowledge and opportunity for responsible and waste-free consumption. We create a welcoming international community of foodies by hosting donation-based events such as foodcycle markets, wasteless wednesday dinners, educational workshops, event caterings and presentations, showcasing that the food that is currently regarded as waste is actually delicious and valuable. 


By raising awareness and empowering citizens, Taste Before You Waste contributes to a social movement that pushes for a fair and sustainable food system and ultimately a socially and environmentally just society.


This statement might seem strong for those that are not familiar with the intersectionality concept that recognizes the different dimensions of oppression existent in our time and space: how distinct aspects of identities are tied to realities of discrimination and power imbalance in society.


It’s fundamental to realize how the environmentalist agenda should be linked to the social justice movement: we can’t advocate for the rights of “Nature” without considering the rights of the people living in it. Black, brown, indigenous and people of colour have been experiencing structural violence by the same capitalistic, colonialist and imperialist system that is causing the environmental crisis on a global scale. They are also the people that are experiencing, and will experience always more, the devastating consequences of climate change. Not considering the interconnections between different mechanisms of structural violence present in society and advocating “just” for environmentalism would only allow the system of oppression to thrive.


We see the need to deepen the conversation about this topic since the current mainstream spread of the sustainability rhetoric has led to a de-politicization of the environmentalist discourse. By promoting practices that are identified as “green” without considering how these perpetrate the same capitalistic system of infinite growth, resource destruction, exploitative labor and social exclusion.   


What we’d like to do by saving and collectively cooking food waste is creating inclusive social and educational occasions where we hope to make people aware of the different dimensions of the environmental issues. We want to create a plural community around waste as a way to resist the same forces that would keep us divided and determine that the food we save had to end up in the bin. 


We want Taste Before You Waste to be a safe space for everyone who wants to join our team or attend our activities.

The life and soul of our organisation


Without our food heroes, Taste Before You Waste would simply not exist! 

From food pick-up and cooking, to social media and photography, there are so many ways to contribute – and we can always use more people on our side in the fight against food waste!

It is such a rewarding experience to give our rescued goodies another chance and a great way connect with like-minded people.

Every Monday and Wednesday we cook together from 14:30 to 18:00 and serve dinner ​from 18:30 - 22:00. In between we enjoy dinner as a team before opening the doors to our guests.

On Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays we pick up fresh produce for all our events and activities. We ride  our carrier bike to our partner shops, fill it up with rescued goodies and bring it back to our location.

From our roots in Amsterdam we have spread seeds of inspiration to other parts of the world. In the Netherlands  branches of Taste Before You Waste have grown strong in Utrecht and Bussum. Overseas the idea has sprouted action in Kingston, Canada and Auckland, New Zealand. Every group operates independently, but with the benefit of sharing resources, experiences and our common cause.
